New NSW BikePlan - What's Happening

Latest news

24 August 2009. Two study reports prepared to inform the new NSW BikePlan are available for download.

The NSW Government has released two reports that present the results of selected studies undertaken as part of the PCAL NSW BikePlan.

The provision and use of bicylce parking at Sydney Region public transport interchanges provides a wealth of data and other findings on the use of a bicycle in combination with train, bus or ferry travel. The size of the Greater Metropolitan region means that growing this market for cycling can contribute significantly towards increased bike use in and around Australia’s premier city. The report prepared for the PCAL NSW BikePlan includes the results of both an audit of bike parking facilities at more than 200 Sydney region public transport interchanges, and a questionnaire completed by cyclists who are already choosing combined bike and public transport travel.

The report on the PCAL NSW BikePlan Community Comments Review briefly overviews the main issues raised in community submissions on the scope of the BikePlan. Comments were invited from all interested stakeholders – both individuals and organisations – for input into work on the new bicycle plan.

The PCAL NSW BikePlan project team is taking the findings of both of these reports into account while finalising work on the new plan. The PCAL NSW BikePlan is expected to be ready for release in 2009.

Background

In August 2008 the NSW Minister for Roads and the NSW Minister for Climate Change & the Environment announced the preparation of a new cycling blueprint aimed at encouraging more people across the state to use bikes as a clean and healthy transport choice. Work on the new NSW BikePlan is being completed for PCAL by a joint project team of the Roads & Traffic Authority and Department of the Environment, Climate Change & Water. The new PCAL NSW BikePlan is expected to be ready for release in 2009, updating and replacing the NSW Government’s 1999 Action for Bikes: BikePlan 2010.

Other activities

The first major task in preparing the PCAL BikePlan for NSW culminated with the December 2008 release of the in-depth report Cycling in New South Wales: What the data tells us. This wide-ranging report has provided important data to inform work on the BikePlan, and will also help local councils planning for future cycling needs. The report contains the results of an extensive review of data on who is cycling where and why across NSW, and associated issues like road safety and bicycle theft. The report also identifies ways in which cycling data collection and management could be improved in NSW.

As well as the Cycling in New South Wales: What the data tells us report, an Electronic Library of Collected Bicycle Information is available for download, containing a number of informative and hard-to-find NSW cycling resources.
