Description/context

<br>Newcastle City Council and Lake Macquarie City Councils purchased the land of this former private coal railway and have since been converting it in stages into a walking and cycling track. The completed section of the track stretches 5.5 kilometres from the Newcastle suburb of Adamstown to Whitebridge in Lake Macquarie, and plans are in place to extend the track another 10 kilometres further south to Belmont. Once complete the total length of the track will be 15.5 kilometres. A feature of the completed section is the Fernleigh Tunnel, which provides a safe route under the Pacific Highway, and connects the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Local Government Areas.
