Description/context

The New South Wales Coastline Cycleway project has enabled significant stretches of safe and convenient cycleway to be constructed in numerous locations on the coast with more sections planned. The New South Wales Government provides annual grant funding to non-metropolitan coastal councils to contribute to the construction of sections of the Cycleway. This is an ongoing program which, since its announcement in March 2003, has funded 68 projects with grants totaling more than $6.7 million. These grants are matched dollar-for-dollar by the participating councils, and some councils have also used developer contributions to contribute to the cost of particular sections of the path. As a result of this program, more than 66 kilometres of cycleway or shared walking and cycle paths have been constructed. Added to existing sections, this has resulted in approximately 300 kilometres of pathway or 20 per cent of the total Coastline route.
